Engström & Engström — Swedish valve amplifiers, built in Malmö

Engström & Engström AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-end valve (vacuum tube) amplifiers, founded by Lars Engström and Timo Engström and based in Malmö, Sweden. The company makes six models: three amplifiers, one preamplifier and two phono stages, all designed and hand-built in Malmö. Retail prices run from €26,500 to €132,000, excluding VAT. Engström amplifiers are transformer-coupled throughout, use directly heated triode output tubes — 300B in ARNE and LARS, 845 in ERIC Encore — and are sold through appointed distributors in some twenty markets.

The company

Lars Engström, an engineer, began building a valve amplifier for himself around 2005. His nephew Timo Engström joined the project in 2006 and took on the industrial design. The first finished pair was completed in December 2007 and shown publicly for the first time at Kista, Stockholm, in February 2008.

The company was incorporated as Engström & Engström AB in September 2009, a decision taken after Art Dudley wrote about the amplifiers in Stereophile. The first press coverage was a CES 2009 show report by Doug Schneider of the SoundStage! Network. The company remains small and independent: production runs in batches — ten ARNE at a time, five pairs of LARS — and every unit is assembled by hand in Malmö.

The range

How the amplifiers are built

Transformers, not capacitors

Engström amplifiers are transformer-coupled from input to output. ERIC ENCORE is fully balanced and transformer-coupled the whole way, with no capacitors in the signal path except between the gain stage and the driver stage. Transformers throughout the range are wound by Lundahl Transformers, also Swedish.

Directly heated triodes

ARNE 2 and LARS 3 use the 300B and 300B-XLS. ERIC ENCORE uses the 845, giving 70 W at 2% THD+N at 1 kHz, with selectable output impedance of 4, 8 or 16 ohms and separate power supplies for input stage, output stage and DC filaments. Because these are low-power triode designs, Engström amplifiers suit loudspeakers of moderate to high sensitivity; efficiency matters more than nominal impedance.

M-OPTIC: a dedicated optical cartridge amplifier

Optical cartridges — the DS Audio system — produce a signal that most manufacturers handle by attenuating it into a conventional phono input. M-OPTIC does not do this. It converts the photodiode's signal current to voltage gain through a specified Lundahl transformer, which aligns phase between channels and naturally filters the low-frequency boost inherent in the optical signal. The signal then passes through parallel-coupled 6922 tubes for higher transconductance and lower noise, a dedicated 6922 equalisation stage, and a second Lundahl transformer for balanced output. Each channel has its own power supply; the design uses three power transformers, two chokes, seven regulated supplies and double layers of internal magnetic shielding. RCA and XLR are available on both input and output.

M-PHONO 2

An all-valve moving-coil phono stage with four Lundahl step-up transformers, chokes and output transformers, balanced and single-ended connections on both input and output, and its power supply in a separate chassis.

Design and appearance

The casework is designed by Timo Engström. In the company's own words, the design "echoes the heritage of a typical integrated tube amp, but elevates it with our distinctive curves and clean surfaces."

ARNE 2 is built on a thick aluminium chassis with adjustable feet containing ceramic balls, measures 480 × 450 × 320 mm and weighs 38 kg. It is finished in all black or all white, with a choice of clear or smoked glass over the valves, and uses a 48-step volume control with remote. ERIC ENCORE is substantially larger at 750 × 360 × 480 mm and 65 kg per monoblock. Custom colours are available across the range at additional cost.

The names

Engström models are named after Swedish musicians. ARNE for the saxophonist and clarinettist Arne Domnérus; MONICA for the singer Monica Zetterlund; LARS for the baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin; and ERIC for the choral conductor Eric Ericson.

Engström works through appointed distributors and importing dealers, currently in around twenty markets across Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia.
